GSA Invest in Texas Director Application

The Graduate Student Assembly is looking for a GSA Invest in Texas Director. Invest in Texas is a non-partisan campaign to advocate for UT students and higher education to the Texas state legislature. It represents a collaborative effort between Student Government, the Senate of College Councils, and the GSA to promote student issues and priorities across the state.

The GSA Invest in Texas Director will work directly with the SG and Senate Directors and other relevant stakeholders to successfully build the Invest in Texas platform and promote it both on and off campus.

This opportunity is described more fully in the attached application. Completed applications should be dropped off in the GSA Mailbox in SAC 3.102 or sent via email (PDF) to Sharla Chamberlain at [email protected] by Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at 5 p.m. CST. All graduate and professional students, including working TAs and RAs, are eligible to apply.

Official Statement Regarding GSA Leadership Change

Dear Members of the Graduate Student Assembly,

I hope you have had a pleasant, productive summer and that the school year has started well! I am writing to let you know about some recent events that will affect the Graduate Student Assembly. On Thursday, August 21st, David Villarreal informed me that he would no longer be continuing as the President of the GSA; he will be focusing personal matters over the coming year. I am sure all graduate students can understand the precarious balance we must strike between our work and our lives outside that work. I have thanked him profusely for his tireless work for the GSA, and he has offered me his counsel moving forward. Pursuant to our constitution (Article IV, Sec 2.1), I have taken on the role of the President of the Graduate Student Assembly and plan to continue in this role.

This does mean, though, that the office of Vice-President is vacant. According to the Constitution (Article IV, Sec 2.2), it is my duty to appoint a candidate to the position who must be confirmed by a 2/3 affirmative vote of the Assembly. I believe that there are fantastic, qualified, passionate individuals who can fill this position, and I am asking for those interested in filling this position to contact me at [email protected].

Despite this change in leadership, we have a dedicated, brilliant Executive Committee and Assembly, and I believe we will make this a year to remember! There are many projects left to tackle (e.g., passage of new governing documents, the passage of Graduate Student Bill of Rights, the push for better housing, among many others!), and I know that this Assembly is more than capable of changing graduate life at UT Austin for the better.

Warmest Regards,
B. Wilkey
President - Graduate Student Assembly
